Emily Gillett
Outreach Officer (Masters)
Emily (she/her) is an MSt Diplomatic Studies candidate and one of the Society’s outreach officers. Having pursued a successful career as a commercial litigator for 15 years, and worked in London, the Cayman Islands and Hong Kong, Emily took a career break in 2021 to diversify beyond the law. Spanning the protests of 2019, the COVID-19 outbreak and the introduction of the National Security Law, Emily’s time in Hong Kong was pivotal in deepening an interest in geopolitics, international relations and diplomacy. Consequently, her career break brought her to Oxford. Having completed the Foundations of Diplomacy Pre-Master’s course at Oxford’s Department for Continuing Education in 2021/2, Emily was thrilled to be selected to join the MSt in Diplomatic Studies this year. She has a particular interest in international Artificial Intelligence regulation, where she sees an acute need for determined diplomatic efforts to navigate concerning cross-border asymmetries that could trigger further instability in international relations. As an outreach officer, Emily is keen to help the Society and its members build networks within the diplomatic profession so that newcomers to the field can gain insights into the wide range of opportunities that the profession has to offer. As Emily relishes the exchange and understanding of divergent perspectives, she looks forward to helping the Society develop its profile within and beyond Oxford to provide a dynamic and stimulating community for members.
