‘Yes Prime Minister’ or ‘Spooks’: what is a career in the civil service really like?

Join us at 5.30 - 6.30 pm on Friday November 4th as Professor Ciaran Martin and Sir Oliver Robbins do a Q and A hosted by Tom Fletcher under the title: ‘Yes Prime Minister’ or ‘Spooks’: what is a career in the civil service really like?

The event will be in the Baring room in Hertford.

Professor Martin was, prior to joining the School, the founding Chief Executive of the National Cyber Security Centre, part of GCHQ and led a fundamental shift in the UK’s approach to cyber security in the second half of the last decade. In his 23-year career in the UK civil service, Professor Martin also held senior roles within the Cabinet Office, including Constitution Director (2011-2014).

Sir Oliver Robbins was appointed as the Prime Minister’s Europe Adviser on the 18th of September. Sir Oliver has had a long Civil Service career spanning HM Treasury, Downing Street and the main board of an operational agency. Previously, he was the Permanent Secretary for the Department for Exiting the European Union. He was also the Deputy National Security Adviser to Prime Minister David Cameron and the UK’s National Security Council.
