Diplomacy and Conflict Resolutions in the Arab World

Join us on Zoom for a conversation with Amre Moussa, Egyptian diplomat, former Minister of Foreign Affairs in Egypt and one the most influential figures in the political life of the Arab world. This event will be an occasion to engage with his insights, reflections and extensive experience in the field of diplomacy, conflict resolutions, peace building, negotiations, peace settlements agreements and the dynamics in the region.

About Amre Moussa:

Ambassador Amre Moussa served as the former Secretary-General of the League of Arab States in 2001and is currently Chairman and Member of the Panel of the Wise of the African Union.

Previously, he served in several Egyptian missions including Egypt’s Embassy in Switzerland and the Egyptian Mission to the United Nations. He was appointed advisor to the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Egypt. In 1990–1991, during the crucial Gulf crisis and subsequent war, Moussa served as Egypt's representative to the UN

His Excellency served as Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations and served also as a member of the United Nations High Level Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change for International Peace and Security.

In the course of his diplomatic career he received a number of awards including the Grand Cordon of the Nile from the Egyptian government in May 2001, the Order of the Two Niles, first class, from Sudan in 2001, and high decorations from Ecuador, Brazil, Argentina and Germany.

Adam Cooper is a conflict mediator and host of The Mediator’s Studio podcast. For the past decade he has worked for the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD), a private diplomacy organisation. He established and heads a new practice area in HD on digital conflict, mediating offensive cyber operations and disinformation on social media. He ran HD’s Myanmar operations for seven years, establishing tracks of negotiations with ethnic armed groups and responding to the Rohingya crisis. Prior to working for HD he coordinated election observation missions in Asia and served as an adviser to former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed. He has degrees from Oxford University and the Harvard Kennedy School. Adam is a Thai and UK national and currently lives in Brussel.

China, COVID-19, and Health Diplomacy

One year ago - March 12th 2020 - the WHO announced the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic. We mark the anniversary with a vital event on health diplomacy.

Dr Yanzhong Huang:

Yanzhong Huang is a senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations, where he directs the Global Health Governance roundtable series. He is also a professor and director of global health studies at Seton Hall University's School of Diplomacy and International Relations, where he developed the first academic concentration among U.S. professional international affairs schools that explicitly addresses the security and foreign policy aspects of health issues. He is the founding editor of Global Health Governance: The Scholarly Journal for the New Health Security Paradigm.

Shirley Martey Hargis:

Shirley Martey Hargis is Deputy Program Manager at CRDF Global, spearheading their new China Technology Transfer and Emerging Technologies programs, leading a team to provide solutions to U.S. Department of State offices. Hargis is Senior Advisor, China at the Oxford Diplomatic Society, a contributor to POLITICO’s China Watcher newsletter, and a trade professional providing the U.S. perspective on global trade at the Trade Policy Exchange. She has combined her understanding of Taiwanese and Chinese political affairs with Mandarin language skills across publications, consulting, and intelligence work.

Dr Jamie Metzl:

Jamie Metzl is a technology and healthcare futurist, geopolitical expert, novelist, entrepreneur, media commentator, Senior Fellow of the Atlantic Council, Singularity University faculty member, and the Founder and Chair of OneShared.World. In 2019, he was appointed to the World Health Organization expert advisory committee on human genome editing.

Roundtable: Diplomats at Oxford

Join us this Tuesday 6-7pm for an enlightening discussion with four inspiring diplomats from Oxford:

Andrés Ordonez-Buitrago has a Bachelor of Laws from Universidad EAFIT (Colombia) and a Master’s degree in Analysis of Contemporary Political, Economic and International Problems. He joined the Colombian Foreign service in 2017 and is currently at Oxford pursuing an MST in Diplomatic Studies as a Weidenfeld- Hoffman Scholar.

Yueqian Zhang has seven years of experience working in International Relations. She has been a foreign policy researcher in the Chinese government, a diplomat at the Chinese embassy in France and an interpreter at the European Commission. She is currently pursuing a Master of Public Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government at Oxford.

Maha Al Hebsi is a Third Secretary Diplomacy in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of UAE. She was the US Desk Officer from 2017-2020 and completed a Master’s Degree in Diplomacy and International Relations in 2018.

Saskia McCulloch has a background as a diplomat for New Zealand. Prior to joining the foreign ministry she was active in the international climate change sector attending negotiations for the Paris Agreement. She completed her undergraduate studies in Islamic Studies and political science, and a Master of International Studies, and is now a Master of Public Policy confidant at the Blavatnik School of Government in Oxford.

Tom Fletcher CMG on the use of technology in diplomacy

Join us for a conversation with Tom Fletcher CMG on digital diplomacy; previous UK-Ambassador to Lebanon, previous foreign advisor to three prime ministers, and current principal of Hertford College at University of Oxford.

After four years as foreign policy adviser to three Prime Ministers, and four representing the UK as Ambassador to Lebanon, Tom is now a Visiting Professor at New York University, and chair of the International Advisory Council of the Creative Industries Federation, promoting Britain’s most dynamic and magnetic sector overseas.

He is a Board Member of the Dubai Future Academy, and an Advisor to the Global Business Coalition for Education and the Emirates Diplomatic Academy. In 2018 he founded The Foundation for Opportunity, which supports good people doing good things in public life, and is Project Director of Towards Global Learning Goals - a network that aims to create greater equality of opportunity, to develop the skills needed to thrive in a new economy, and to make it easier for people on the move to adapt. His book on the future of statecraft, ‘The Naked Diplomat: Power and Politics in the Digital Age’, was published in June 2016 by Harper Collins. In September 2020 Tom took up the role of Principal of Hertford College, Oxford.
